I think it was most likely a money issue. Handel was clever enough to realise that if he wanted to earn more money then he'd have to move to London where everyone was going crazy for music and theatre after London's reconstruction after the Great Fire (1666). He moved to Brooke Street in London for the last 36 years of his life however, he found that the English didn't want to listen to Italian operas or German cantatas, they wanted pieces written in English which is why Handel wrote his oratorios for them.
Handel settled in London in 1712. He lived in a newly built house at 25 Brook Street in 1723, which he rented until his death in 1759.
Handel came to Dublin to get away from the busy life in London, so that he could do some work in 1741. Handel's Messiah first performance in the world was performed in Dublin on the 13th of April, 1742.
