Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield were/are the best of friends. Lars's father was a professional tennis player, and so Lars was hoping to grow up like his father. But for is birthday, Larz's grandmother gave him a drum kit and so the rocking started. James and Lars posted an ad in the newspaper and got loads of responses. Then they hired Cliff Burton (God rest his soul) and Kirk Hammet. They were 17 when they did their first gig and they are still touring now at the age of, well, they are in their 40s.
