It is not possible to say with any certainty what will happen to Florida in the future. Here is information on rising sea levels: The Fourth Report of the IPCC (The United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), Climate Change 2007, said:
- Losses from the land-based ice-sheets of Greenland and Antarctica have very likely (>90%) contributed to sea level rise between 1993 and 2003.
- Ocean warming causes seawater to expand, which contributes to sea level rising.
- Sea level rose at an average rate of about 1.8 mm/year during the years 1961-2003. The rise in sea level during 1993-2003 was at an average rate of 3.1 mm/year. It is not clear whether this is a long-term trend or just variability.
It is saying that sea levels are rising, but it doesn't know if the recent 3 mm a year will continue or not. If it stays at that rate that means 3 cm in ten years, and 30 cm in 100 years. (Thirty cm is about one foot.) One foot of sea level rise would certainly flood some low lying coastal areas of Florida.
