You are probably thinking of the opening of the Suez Canal; Verdi is sometimes believed to have written Aida to commemorate that event, though that is questionable.
At age 58, he composed Aida, in commemoration of the opening of the Suez Canal in 1871.
No he only wrote the music. The "lyrics", properly called the libretto, were written by Antonio Ghislanzoni.
