While Whitney did, in fact, record in 1977 as a 14 year-old as a back up singer on a record "Life's A Party" and at 15 on Chaka Khan's "I'm every Woman" mother Cissy insisted high school be the priority. MANY record deals were offered to her but to no avail as her mother was protective of Whitney's education. Clive Davis signed her officially to her first recording contract in 1983. The world would have to wait to hear her professionally- her first release was a duet with Teddy Pendergrass that went to #5 on the R&B charts ("Hold Me" which was on his album). This song would also be featured on her debut album in 1985.
