In late '66 / early '67. Elton (who was then still known as Reginald Dwight) was first introduced to Taupin by Ray Williams, who was the A&R man for Liberty Records- Bernie Taupin was an aspiring songwriter, and Williams gave Elton a stack of song lyrics by him which needed to be set to music. Elton composed tunes for a sample few, posted them to Taupin who was impressed, and thenceforth their professional partnership began which endures to this day.

The first single they released was called Scarecrow, in 1967.
