Steve Perry did not form Journey. Journey was formed originally in 1973 as an instrumental studio band by founding members Neal Schon (guitarist) and Gregg Rolie (keyboards, Hammond organ), both of Santana. The band progressed from its Latin roots towards jazz fusion for a while, eventually evolving into a progressive rock band and adding in lyrics and singing. Gregg Rolie was the first vocalist for Journey, technically, and then singer Robert Fleischman joined for a brief time between 1975 and 1977. Steve Perry was officially made a member in 1978 after having tagged along, hanging around backstage, on a tour that Journey did with Emerson, Lake and Palmer and proving his vocal skills during practice sessions. Journey's manager, Herbie Herbert, first heard Steve Perry sing "If You Need Me, Call Me" on a demo tape which blew him away and lead him to invite Perry to come along on said tour in the first place.
