Steve Perry did not form Journey. Journey was formed originally in 1973 as an instrumental studio band by founding members Neal Schon (guitarist) and Gregg Rolie (keyboards, Hammond organ), both of Santana. The band progressed from its Latin roots towards jazz fusion for a while, eventually evolving into a progressive rock band and adding in lyrics and singing. Gregg Rolie was the first vocalist for Journey, technically, and then singer Robert Fleischman joined for a brief time between 1975 and 1977. Steve Perry was officially made a member in 1978 after having tagged along, hanging around backstage, on a tour that Journey did with Emerson, Lake and Palmer and proving his vocal skills during practice sessions. Journey's manager, Herbie Herbert, first heard Steve Perry sing "If You Need Me, Call Me" on a demo tape which blew him away and lead him to invite Perry to come along on said tour in the first place.
1977, after the groups manager, herbie Herbet, said they need a lead singer. Steve Perry was giving up in music, after he got a music contract with another group, and 3 days befor the group recorded an album, the bassist was killed in a car crash.
Steve Perry, former lead singer of Journey, was in the band for almost 21 years; he was hired in the fall of 1977, and left the band in 1998. The band wasn't in touch, though, between 1986 and 1995 (the year they decided to rejoin and release Trial By Fire).
Journey came together in San Francisco in 1973 with it's original members . They were at the height of their poularity during the 1970's, and early 1980's. They broke up for a few years, and then reunited in 1994.
