It is hard to determine when the pan Flute was invented. It is one of the earliest and most primitive instruments ever recorded. Only percussion instruments preceded it. Archaeological excavations have found Viking records and pictures displaying panpipes dating from the 10th century. You can also find evidence in museums around the world of pan flutes from the Pre- Columbian Period, dating from between 300 and 1500 AD.

No one knows who invented them, but the pan-pipes, or panflute have been in existence since ancient Greek and Roman days.

There is a story in Greek mythology that says the god Pan created the first panflute. He was enamored of the Nymph Syrinx, and chased her to the edge of a river where, in desperation, she begged the help of the water nymphs who transformed her into hollow reeds. Pan took the reeds and made the first Panflute out of them.

The oldest flute ever discovered may be a fragment of the femur of a juvenile cave bear, with two to four holes, found at Divje Babe in Slovenia and dated to about 43,000 years ago.
