While the roots of rock and roll can be found in blues (as far back as the 1920s), the music we know as rock (or top-40 rock) did not begin to grow in popularity till 1955-1956. Most historians would say the mid-1950s because that was when there were a growing number of top-40 radio stations playing this music, as young people demanded more of it. The emergence of huge stars like Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Fats Domino also helped to usher in the rock era.
