From ovulation to laying, the process of egg production takes about 24 hours. A Robin's ovary releases a mature ovum at daily intervals during the breading season until a complete clutch has been laid. What we recognize as the yolk of the egg is in fact the ovum, a single cell. The whites of the egg are added as it goes down the oviduct. As the ovum passes into the shell glad, the papillae secrete more albumen and the hard calcium-rich outer shell. Shell pigmentation also takes place here; the patterns reflect the speed of the eggs passage.
