That was Jimi Hendrix.
Yes. Yes he was essentially the Monterey Pop Festival. He blew all the other bands out of the water. His performances climaxed in him setting fire to his guitar for the first time.
It was The Who then Jimi Hendrix.
At the Monterey Pop Festival, on Sunday, June 18, 1967, Hendrix played his final set, including "Wild Thing". He then set fire to his Fender Stratocaster electric guitar, and smashed it. Speculation was that he was inspired by the guitar-breaking in performances by The Who's Pete Townshend.(see related link)The first time Hendrix set his guitar on fire was March 31, 1967 at the London Astoria Club but the most famous and remembered instance is the Monterey Pop festival.Bobby Womack, fellow guitarist on tour with Cooke/Wilson in early 60s, claims that the first time Hendrix set his guitar ablaze was actually in 1964 but no photographic evidence exists to back it up.
