Drake was knighted on 4 April 1581, in his flagship, the galleon Golden Hind, on the Thames by the Lord Admiral's House at Deptford. He was awarded the degree of knight bachelor by Queen Elizabeth but she delegated the honour of knighting Drake on the day to the French ambassador, de Machaund, which served to give French acquiescence to Drake's somewhat questionable privateering against Spanish merchant ships. There is some debate within the Drake Society as to the day of the month but most biographers - including the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography - take Hakluyt's date of 4th April as being correct.
