This traditional Christmas jolly-old-st-nicholas-americanappeared in the early part of the twentieth century, though its melody may have roots traceable to the previous century. Some have attributed this popular carol the country singer of Canadian origin, Wilf Carter (1904-1996), known as Montana Slim. Although he recorded a selection of Christmas songs that included "Jolly Old St. Nicholas," he was not, in all likelihood, the song's author. The melody to "St. Nicholas" is rather simple in its childlike charm, with four repeating notes leading every phrase of the theme -- a theme that has a music box-like quality. It is the perfect melody for such a chime-like treatment, with much else in its thematic fabric repeating, like the three notes immediately following the opening four. The lyrics are just as simple, with every other line rhyming and with the last verse containing a grocery list of items for Santa to bring: Johnny wants skates, Susy a dolly, and so on. While the song is utterly straightforward in its expressive manner, it also offers a charm that will have strong appeal for children. ~ Robert Cummings, Rovi
