The original concept for the show was first proposed in 1949 and Jerome Robbins and Leonard Bernstein began outlining the scenes that year, although then it was set between fighting Jewish and Catholic families.

It was called "East Side Story" during it's early development.

Because it was so controversial it was an on-again, off-again project until it 'gelled' into the form we know now in 1956.

It's first performance was August 19th, 1957 at the National Theater, Washington, D.C.

It first played Broadway September 26th, 1957.
