I think you mean, if you"dot" a quarter note, does it equal a half note? The answer to that is NO. Dotting a note makes it 50% longer, or in other words adds half the original value. If a quarter note gets one beat then a dotted quarter note gets 1.5 beats. A half note is DOUBLE a quarter note, or 100% longer (2 beats). It's easy to think about if you measure in eighth notes:
Quarter Note = 2 Eighth Notes
Dotted Quarter = 3 Eighth Notes
Half Note = 4 Eighth Notes.
I believe the quarter note equals 42, but I'm not really sure.
2 quarters equals a half.2 quarter notes in a half note.
Only one thing. A dotted half-note. The dot extends the length of a note by one-half. There is nothing in notation that stands for a three/quarter note.
If you were singing these notes, the half note and quarter note would be a two syllable word, the dotted half note would be a one syllable word held for the same amount of time as the two syllable word.

A minim. A 1 beat note is a crotchet, and a half-beat note is a quaver :)
one and one fourth
Rule of Three: Each note value contains within it, three of the next smallest note. Ex: one Quarter note equals three Eight notes, and one Half note equals three Quarter notes. So a Sixteenth note equals three 32nd notes.

3 quarter notes equal one dotted half note. A quarter note is one beat, and a dotted half note is three beats, so there are 3 quarter notes in a dotted half note.
Two eighth notesOne quarter note is one beat
notes that are equal to two quarter notes are: 1 half-note, 4 eight-notes. Hope this helps
