Sometimes referred to as The Empress of the Blues, Smith was the most popular female blues singer of the 1920s and 1930s. She is often regarded as one of the greatest singers of her era and, along with Louis Armstrong, a major influence on subsequent jazz vocalists.

Bessie was not JUST a blues singer. She was a full fledged performer, dancer, comedian - the whole nine yards. There are no movies or evidence of her live traveling shows. What we have left is the recordings of her singing talents which not only included blues but pop arrangements and a little gospel. Her one and only film, "St. Louis Blues" only gives a watered down hint of her acting abilities but it certainly captured that fabulous voice!
