Bessie was not JUST a blues singer. She was a full fledged performer, dancer, comedian - the whole nine yards. There are no movies or evidence of her live traveling shows. What we have left is the recordings of her singing talents which not only included blues but pop arrangements and a little gospel. Her one and only film, "St. Louis Blues" only gives a watered down hint of her acting abilities but it certainly captured that fabulous voice!

Bessie began singing on the streets of Chattanooga with her brother who eventually ran off with a traveling show. Her niece states she was kidnapped by the gypsies and that the story of her being kidnapped by Ma Rainey was false.

Bessie performed all over and was with different shows in the teens before she got a name for herself and had her own traveling show. She was part of the TOBA circuit and played theaters from New York down into the deep south. She also had tent shows in the summer months for the rural southern areas and had her own train car that housed all the performs, props, etc.

She played at the Lafayette theater a lot in Harlem and early on at the 81 in Atlanta.
