They were all friends in high school. They were known to be very musical and hoped to be better then The Beatles. The band name came from the singer Adam Lavrine's favorite color maroon and the fact that there were 5 members.

Adam Levine and a few other members of a band called "Kara's Flowers" released only one album, in 1997, called "The Fourth World". It wasn't really too successful, but the album "Songs About Jane" was released by "Maroon 5". This album was a huge success and Maroon 5 gained most of their fans with their debut album.
