There are several variants as to where the phrase "Face the Music" comes from ..

1. From the Military tradition of Drumming out of disgraced soldiers, where they were banished from the regiment to the sound of drums and probably a fair amount of jeering from other soldiers.

2. An English folk custom called "rough music" or "Ran-tanning " where noisy, angry villagers would amass outside of the house of someone who had violated the local standards, normally for domestic abuse, cruelty to animals etc..... the crowd would normally bang pots, pans ...normally took place in the evening over three successive nights..obviously the wrongdoer could either flee the village or open his door and "face the Music "( the villagers)
