Mesopotamian and Gupta Empire Indian art often shows people playing a similarly shaped instrument. The god Pan first appears in literature in the 6th century BC, and is virtually always depicted with his Flute. Ovid describes shepherds using pan flutes, and Roman digs in France have discovered them. There are even Viking pan flutes dated to the 10th century.
