John at first lived with his first wife Cynthia and their son Julian until he met Yoko Ono. He and Yoko were eventually married and they lived together with Yoko's daughter Kyoko (at times). When John moved to New York, he and Yoko lived together except for an 18 month separation in which John lived with girlfriend May Pang. John then went back to Yoko. They soon had a son, Sean whom John lived with until his death in 1980.

John Lennon and Yoko Ono wrote the song (whose first line is "And so this is Christmas", so it is sometimes mistaken for the title) in their New York City hotel room, and recorded it (with the Harlem Community Boys Choir) during the evening of October 28 and into the morning of the 29th, 1971 at the Record Plant in New York. It was released in the US for Christmas, but didn't chart. The next year, it was released in the UK, where it did much better.
He mostly continued his legendary music career, while enjoying his life in New York with Yoko.
