Woodstock took place August 15-18 in the town of Bethel, NY, outside the hamlet of White Lake. Bethel is in Sullivan County, which adjoins Ulster County where the town of Woodstock lies. There have been 5 different Woodstocks. The original (and most famous) was in 1969 and set the dates for future Woodstocks. 1979 (10 year anniversary), 1989 (20 year anniversary), 1994 (25 year anniversary), and 1999 (30 year anniversary and most infamous). Here are the locations of all the Woodstocks: 1969- Originally Woodstock 69 was scheduled to take place in the 300-acre Mills Industrial Park in Wallkill, New York. Town officials were assured that no more than 50,000 would attend. On July 15, 1969, the Wallkill Zoning Board of Appeals officially banned the concert on the basis that the planned portable toilets would not meet town code. Eventually, Woodstock 69 would be held on Max Yasgur's 600 acre dairy farm in the Catskills, 43 miles from the town of Woodstock 1979- Although it isn't considered a festival, a rock concert took place at Madison Square Garden that celebrated the 10th year anniversary of Woodstock 69. Later in the year (September 7), the Woodstock Reunion 79 took place at Parr Meadows racetrack on Long Island, New York. 1989- Woodstock 89 or "The Forgotten Woodstock" was done very spontaneously and didn't attract much attention. It took place on the site of the 69 concert. 1994- This Woodstock took place in a large field in Saugerties, New York about 100 miles from New York City and 10 miles from Woodstock, New York. 1999- The most infamous Woodstock, like the others was performed in New York. For the this festival, the location was Rome, New York which is about 200 miles from Woodstock, new York
The event was originally scheduled to take place in the town of Woodstock, New York. The venue fell through and at the last minute a new place had to be found. The farm used was Max Yasgur's dairy farm in Bethel NY. With posters already printed and all of the word of mouth, the name of the event was not changed.
Woodstock is a small town in Oxfordshire England but if you mean the music festival of the 1960's, that was in New York State.
Yes, Arnold Skolnick was comissioned to re-design the original Wallkill Poster designed by David Byrds. The Woodstock Ventures group was still in negotiations with the town of Wallkill to have the event there. They decided a more user friendly poster was needed and softened the theme to "Three days of Peace and Music" in a last ditch effort to appease the townsfolk and be granted permission. As a result, very few of these were ever printed, and as we know, the event was banned from Wallkill and moved to Bethel, and the now famous Max Yassgurs farm. The line-up of bands were still being put together and some of the bands listed on the Wallkill did not attend. Very few printed, and hard to find.
