Film was much the same as it is now, except that there was no colour 3D (or at least, not very good 3D) and films had to be developed before they could be viewed or edited (now, professional film cameras include synchronized video capture, so a scene can be viewed immediately to see if it was shot correctly).
TV used CRT (Picture Tube) technology exclusively (no "flat" screens) and analog signals (no HI-DEF). Cable TV was in its infancy, so most homes watched broadcast TV from local stations with an antenna either on top of the set ("rabbit ears") or on the roof. With no cable stations like HBO, there was no swearing or nudity on broadcast TV, and there were no DVD recorders/players or home VCRs. TV content was pretty much the same as now: dramas, comedies, daytime "soaps" and network and local news. There were more variety shows, like Ed Sullivan, Dinah Shore, or Dean Martin, and a few contest shows like The Price is Right and What's My Line?, and there were fewer Talk Shows like Dr. Oz, Dr. Phil and Queen Latifah.
50 years ago, America's entertainment was much more wholesome. Although at this time, there was much controversy within America, most people still looked back at the good times of the fifties and forties. The music was a completely different style, with big band swing, jazz, and the very beginning of pop and rock and roll.
The first commercial TV broadcast occurred in 1939, but operating TVs had been around for about 10 years, at that time.
