Lars Ulrich got the name after persuading a friend friend of his. His friend was not too sure what to call his new Metal Magazine he has a bunch names, and then when it boiled down to just to Metal Mania and Metallica, Lars persuaded him to go for Metal Mania so Lars can steel Metallica. Lars was not good with band names at all. He would make names up that did not sound as good. If he did not see this name that his friend had and did not persuade him to use Metal Magazine NOT Metallica.... THEN Lars maybe stuck when it comes to choosing an ideal name for his band.
No. That title would probably go to either The Beatles or The Rolling Stones.

In 1981 the band was Jame Hetfield, Lars Ulrich and for one month a guitar teacher named Lloyd Grant. After Lloyd left Dave Mustaine joined and James brought in bassist Ron McGovney. James and Ron were bandmates before in a band called Leather Charm. Ron would soon quit the band, tiring of Dave Mustaine. Metallica would replace him with Cliff Burton of the band Trauma. Soon after James and Lars became tired of Mustaine as well and they replace Mustaine with Kirk Hammett of Exodus. In 1987 in Sweden Metallica's bus had an accident and bassist Cliff Burton was killed. Enter bassist Jason Newstead from the band Flotsam and Jetsom. This would be Metallica's line up until 2002 when Jason left the band because James would not let him do a side project band called Echobrain. producer Bob Rock filled in on bass for a while until Metallica hired bassist Robert Trujillo. Robert had previously worked for Ozzy and Suicidal Tendacies. There you go!
