No last name is given for Auntie Em in either the original 1900 book version or the beloved 1939 film version of 'The Wizard of Oz'. All that author and Oz book series originator Lyman Frank Baum [May 15, 1856-May 6, 1919] lets his audience know is that Auntie Em's niece Dorothy has the last name of Gale. But we don't know if that's her biological or foster parents' last name. Neither does Baum let his audience know if the blood relationship is between Dorothy and Aunt Em, or between Dorothy and Uncle Henry.
Subsequently in the Oz book series, Uncle Henry says that, like mother like daughter, Dorothy is a dreamer. That seems to indicate that the blood relationship is between Dorothy and her uncle. But we still don't know whether the name Gale is Dorothy's mother's married name or if it's Uncle Henry's name.
Clara Blandick [June 4, 1880-April 15, 1962] had a solid career in supporting roles, and as a character actress, on stage and in film. On the stage, she also became known for starring roles, such as in Madame Butterfly, and in Mrs. Black is Back. In terms of films, it has been less easy to reconstruct her career, because of the many roles for which she received no mention in the credits. The best guestimates have been 150-200 films over the course of almost 40 years of on-screen work, from 1911 until her retirement in 1950. Blandick's first on-screen acting job was in the silent film The Maid's Double. Her last two films were Key to the City, and Love That Brute, in 1950. And in-between were roles as Aunt Polly in Tom Sawyer, and Huckleberry Finn, in 1930-1931; as Mrs. Pringle in Anne of Windy Poplars, in 1940; a customer in The Big Store, in 1941; a socialite in Can't Help Singing, in 1944; and a murderess in Philo Vance Returns, in 1947.
Aunt Em's last name isn't given. We know that Dorothy's last name is Gale. But author and Oz series originator Lyman Frank Baum [May 15, 1856-May 5, 1919] gives us no information, in The Wizard of Oz, other than that Dorothy is an orphan who lives with her Uncle Henry and Aunt Em.
Later in the Oz series, Dorothy gets to know her Cousin Zeb. Zeb makes a reference to "your" Uncle Henry's wife's sister. And also later in the series, Uncle Henry describes Dorothy as a dreamer, just like her Mother. These two statements may lead readers to suspect that there's indeed a blood relationship between Dorothy and Uncle Henry, most likely on the order of a niece to her maternal uncle. But we still have no idea what Uncle Henry's last name is.
Actually in the movie it does give a last name for Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. On the mailbox the last name of Gayle is listed as well as when Miss Gulch comes to collect Toto she addresses Henry as "Gayle".
Aunt Em. Author and Oz series originator Lyman Frank Baum [May 15, 1856-May 5, 1919] doesn't give us a last name. Neither does he explain the nature of the relationship between Dorothy Gale and her Uncle Henry and Aunt Em. Is there a blood relationship? If so, on which side does it exist? Later in the Oz book series, Dorothy meets up with her Cousin Zeb, who refers to "your" Uncle Henry's wife's sister. That may lead readers to think of a blood relationship as possibly being between a girl and her maternal uncle. Also, later in the Oz book series, Uncle Henry describes Dorothy as a dreamer, just as her Mother was. So this adds support to the suspicion of a blood relationship, and one by way of a sister-brother relationship between Dorothy's mother and Uncle Henry.
Gale is the name that is on the mailbox to Aunt Em's house in "The Wizard of Oz."
Specifically, this is an incident in the beloved 1939 film version but not the original 1900 book edition of "The Wizard of Oz." It serves as the last name of Dorothy, the story's main character and heroine. It turns out that she is an orphan girl who lives with her Uncle Henry and Aunt Em, neither of whom is identified as other than that, without a last name.
In The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Auntie Em and Uncle Henry are called just that. No last names.
