Elvis' Father, Vernon Presley, authorized a "public viewing" at Graceland (Elvis home for three decades) which took place the day after Elvis died...on August 17, 1977. Elvis, lying in his casket, was "set up" in the foyer area of Graceland and over 30,000 fans were allowed in (with another 50,000 outside the gates of Graceland) to pay their respects. Funeral services were held at Graceland with a large progression of 16 white Cadillac's, and the hearse carrying Elvis' body, with a police escort going from Graceland to Forest Hill Cemetery. This is the same cometary where his beloved Mother (Gladys Love Presley) was buried. Within a few weeks of Elvis' passing Vernon Presley was legally authorized, due to threats made to steal Elvis' body, to remove both Elvis and Gladys from Forest Hills Cemetery. On October 3, 1977 both Elvis and Gladys were buried at Graceland.
Elvis Presley inspired tom petty. his uncle was hired to be on the set of one of Elvis' movies that was being filmed in Gainesville. Petty's uncle invited him on the set and petty was amazed and ever since then wanted to be a rock and roll rebel. he traded his sling shot for a friends collection of Elvis records and that was it.
