Koko (born July 4, 1971) is a female gorilla who, according to Francine "Penny" Patterson, is able to understand more than 1,000 signs based on American Sign Language and understand approximately 2,000 words of spoken English.
The bonobo (a type of ape), Kanzi, who learned to speak using a keyboard with lexigrams, picked up some sign language from watching videos of Koko; Kanzi's researcher, Sue Savage-Rumbaugh, did not realize he could sign until Kanzi began signing to anthropologist Dawn Prince-Hughes, who had previously worked closely with gorillas.
Washoe (c. September 1965 Ellensburg - October 30, 2007) was a female chimpanzee who was the first non-human to learn to communicate using American Sign Language, as part of a research experiment on animal language acquisition.
A few other gorillas and chimpanzees have supposedly learned sign language.

Of course, they can have no fingers, but dolphins and some whales have been taught to respond to sign language as well.
Unlikely. While there is no record of whether Beethoven did or not know sign language, it is highly unlikely, as he came from an era when men and women did not learn sign language if deafness developed during their adult life - as it did in Beethoven's case. Sign language was still evolving in the early 1800s, and it was taught primarily to children who had no other way of communicating. Beethoven, as an adult, was still capable of communicating via other ways, particularly writing. That he would learn or use sign language would be highly improbable.

A few gorillas have been taught to use American Sign Language, and they turn out to have a fair knack for it. The first gorilla to learn sign language was named Koko, and she was such a gentle giant that she adopted a kitten of her own, which she named "All Ball". Some researchers believe that Koko taught sign language to another gorilla in her cage. So it is at least possible that in the future, other gorillas and great apes may be able to communicate in this way.
The only examples of sign language use in animals were some primates who were taught by humans. But they do not reproduce the full range of language when communicating with each other.
Koko, the gorilla known for learning sign language, was taught by Francine Patterson, a researcher who conducted a long-term study of primate communication at the Gorilla Foundation in California. Patterson began teaching Koko sign language in 1972 when Koko was just a year old.

Well, to say that an animal is small, show the size of it with your two hands or one hand showing the distance of it from the floor with your palm down. Then sign the animal.
Sign language has existed for hundreds of years in various forms, but it became recognized as a formal language in the 18th century. One of the earliest recorded instances is the creation of a sign language for the deaf community in France by Abbe Charles-Michel de l'Epee in the 1700s. Modern sign languages have evolved and developed since then.
