There are two primary trombonists in jazz named Tom Smith. They are father and son. The better known is the son, born in the 1950s and although was around New Orleans in the 1970s never played with Fountain. However, the father was a regular dixieland jazz performer in the 1970s at top New Orleans venues and often subbed for trombonist Tom Geckler in the Fountain bands.
Skillet is now opening up for secular bands because Christian artists (like Skillet) sometimes get offered more than their usual pay to open up for secular bands since secular bands are more popular. While most Christian artists refuse this generous offer, Skillet did not.

There are many folk bands all over the UK, you can go to any outdoor festival and there will usually be one there. Frank Turner (who played in the Olympic stadium as an opening for the opening ceremony) is one of my personal folk acts, however there are many many more. Folk does not tend to enter into popular music, however. The movement is mostly underground.
