Affects in baroque music is the use of simple tokens of music as symbols. One example is the cross, which is symbolized by usually four notes forming a cross shape. An example would be B-A-C-H (or Bb-A-C-B in most countries), where the cross' "stem" would be B-H and the beam would be A-C.

Many different affects existed, and was well known also to (some of) the audience.
