The goal is a song that sells and although the band members may be able to sing adequately, they may not be able to learn a complicated (good sounding) background vocal arrangement fast enough (or well enough) to allow them to sing. Of course, unlimited studio time and "layering" allows a nice mosaic to be spliced/patched together anyway (as Steve Sholes did with Elvis) and this is usually good enough. The really high-quality songs always have great background singers: KISS couldn't use them, but Celine Deone needs them: crass versus class. If you were the lead vocal and your band could play but only "sorta" sing, the session manager ( AR guy ) would know immediately and make other (professional) arrangements. You'd want this, the AR guy would demand it, and your disappointed band members would learn a hard, cruel lession in audio recording: if you can't sing, you won't be allowed to ( unless you're Paris Hilton and her singing comes with a nice "personal" video that overwhelms the audio anyway). The studio is a completely different world from a stage act. In fact, many great stage bands just can't cut it in the very structured atmosphere of the studio -- that's why there are session musicians and, of course, background singers. Nick P.
