What did the word phony mean to Holden Caulfield?

The most noticeable of Holden's "peculiarities" is how extremely judgmental he is of almost everything and everybody. He criticizes and philosophizes about people who are boring, people who are insecure, and, above all, people who are "phony." Holden carries this penchant for passing judgment to such an extreme that it often becomes extremely funny, such as when he speculates that people are so crass that someone will probably write "f*** you" on his tombstone. Holden applies the term "phony" not to people who are insincere but to those who are too conventional or too typical-for instance, teachers who "act like" teachers by assuming a different demeanor in class than they do in conversation or people who dress and act like the other members of their social class. While Holden uses the label "phony" to imply that such people are superficial, his use of the term actually indicates that his own perceptions of other people are superficial. In almost every case, he rejects more complex judgments in favor of simple categorical ones. -NERD!

Do rock bands have background singers?

Yes and No !! It depends what the AR guy can get from the band and how fast. The goal is a song that sells and although the band members may be able to sing adequately, they may not be able to learn a complicated (good sounding) background vocal arrangement fast enough (or well enough) to allow them to sing. Of course, unlimited studio time and "layering" allows a nice mosaic to be spliced/patched together anyway (as Steve Sholes did with Elvis) and this is usually good enough. The really high-quality songs always have great background singers: KISS couldn't use them, but Celine Deone needs them: crass versus class. If you were the lead vocal and your band could play but only "sorta" sing, the session manager ( AR guy ) would know immediately and make other (professional) arrangements. You'd want this, the AR guy would demand it, and your disappointed band members would learn a hard, cruel lession in audio recording: if you can't sing, you won't be allowed to ( unless you're Paris Hilton and her singing comes with a nice "personal" video that overwhelms the audio anyway). The studio is a completely different world from a stage act. In fact, many great stage bands just can't cut it in the very structured atmosphere of the studio -- that's why there are session musicians and, of course, background singers. Nick P. So, "sure they do" (especially on stage) except when you can "do it yourself".

Was john Lennon evil?

Yes he was a very kind man. He fought for peace and equality. He wasn't the best father in the 60's but he turned himself around when he opened his life to peace. Watch how John deals with the trespasser in "Imagine". He couldn't have been nicer.
