After that the conductor helps shape the music and determines who needs to be louder or softer. The woodwind and brass instruments often sound louder because of the different colors they bring to the sound of the orchestra.

Cymbals belong to the percussion section of an orchestra. Cymbals have, relative to other instruments in an orchestra, an unique timbre which allows them to be heard through the most loudest orchestrations.

A concertmaster or concertmistress is the leader of the first violin section of an orchestra. They usually come on stage last and tune the orchestra. They are also usually the most skilled player.
The cello belongs to the strings section, and is usually used in most string quartets, and is always required in orchestras.
