D.W. Griffith was a film director in the early to mid 1900's. He directed the famous movie Birth of a Nation which portrayed the KKK as heroes. The film sold over 200 million tickets and led to the important court case in which the supreme court decided that films could be censored and were not protected by the First Amendment.
