The term "African drum" can refer to various types of drums across the continent, each with its own specific name. One well-known example is the "djembe," a goblet-shaped drum originating from West Africa. Other examples include the "dunun," a bass drum often played alongside the djembe, and the "talking drum," or "dundun," which can mimic human speech. Each region and culture may have its unique names and styles for their traditional drums.
One famous artist known for incorporating djembe drums into their music is Paul Simon, particularly in his album "Graceland," which features a blend of African musical influences. Additionally, the band Tinariwen, hailing from Mali, prominently features djembe and other traditional percussion in their desert blues style. These artists highlight the djembe's rich rhythmic qualities and cultural significance in their compositions.

There are many kinds of hand drums. Most noteably the Congas, Bongos, and Djembe.
Exactly what you referred to them as: drums. In reality, however, you can't call all african drums by one name.....otherwise they would all be the exact same drum haha! Just to give you an idea, here are some of the different types of African Drums: Djembe Talking Drum Bata Bougarabou Ngoma Check out videos and recordings of the different types and you'll realize how unique each drum is!

Some of the most popular African Drums are the Djembe (my personal favorite), the Talking Drum, Bata, Bougarabou, and the Ngoma. Look up videos of all of them being played...they all have similar qualities but each one produces a unique sound!
Referring to the Drums in Guinea, the Djembe is a common instrument with an open rolling style. Other African drums such as Surdos, shekeres, agogo bells and the geille have all originated from other parts of the continent. Please excuse my spelling.
