The group we now know as ABBA began with Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson meeting and then collaberating their songwriting talents back in the 1960's. Later the girls joined and the rest is history.

The band ABBA was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010 on the basis of their "influence and significance" to the music industry. They were influential in several ways:

  1. ABBA was the first European act -- in fact the first act from outside the US or UK -- to achieve global success in the pop-rock era, charting more than 40 singles on every continent between 1972 and 1983.
  2. ABBA was likely the first act to strategically use what we now call music video to expand their reach into new markets.
  3. They are generally acknowledged to be the first act to embrace digital production. The leading-edge studio they built in Stockholm, Polar Studios, went on to produce many top acts through the 80s and 90s.
  4. ABBA's 1981 album, The Visitors, was not only the first all-digital album, it was the first to be released on CD.
  5. The popular revival of the band in the 90s followed Polydor's release of the album Gold in 1992, which music critic Elisabeth Vincentelli has called one of the most influential compilation albums ever released.
  6. Gold and More Gold (1993) led directly to the creation of the stage musical Mamma Mia! in 1997 by Judy Cramer and Catherine Johnson, which incorporates ABBA's music. Mamma Mia! became one of the most successful musicals of all time, and is now the 10th longest-running play in Broadway history.
  7. Perhaps one of the band's greatest influences has been their steadfast resolve not to reunite, unlike so many of their contemporaries. They have said they prefer to be celebrated for what they were, young and full of life, than be remembered for endlessly performing cover versions of their old material.
