Bachata rhythm is original from the Dominican Republic. It started in the 60's as a low class music played at the brothels and places where prostitutes hanged around. This is because of the lyrics of the Bachata songs, as they singers sang about bitter love, cheating, etc.
Bachata evolve through time, going through different stages from the 60's-90's. The most important event in Bachata History is when the singer "Juan Luis Guerra" with the 4:40 Band decided to change the lyrics of Bachata from bitter love to "good love" and make the rhythm itself more "user-friendly" to mainstream music. From them on, the popularity of Bachata grew worldwide, and the rest, well... you know how popular it is.
