It was something she'd wanted to do since she was very small, singing her first 'made-up' song Little Tiny Tassletop, about a corn doll her father had made for her, when she was just 5. She had ambition and courage and always dreamed of being a star, so, in the end, with her determination, she got there. She says her Mama's side of the family were always very musical and that singing in her grandfather's church (Jake Owens was a pentecostal preacher) meant it had been with her from a very early age. She loved to perform and to be the centre of attention, and singing meant that, for a little while, she was, as it was hard to get attention in a family of 12 children.
Her song "I Will Always Love You" was one she wrote/sang for Porter Wagoner when she was leaving his show.
