The story line was to follow a Jewish girl and a Catholic boy around Easter/Passover. By the time the collaborators got around to actually writing the show though, that story line was no longer as relevant as when they had originally conceived it. After reading an article in the news paper about the prevalence of gang violence and the increase of the Puerto Rican population the collaborators decided to change it to what it is now (more or less), including the title to West Side Story.
