Explain poverty as a theme of Oliver Twist?

Oliver's mother was going out with a married man. This made her family upset, so they disowned her. It turned out she was pregnant with Oliver. She had no choice but to give birth to him in a workhouse and died. So the people there immediantly assumed he was an orphan and that his mother was a pregnant prostitute. So Oliver was raised to believe he was an unloved orphan. We later find out that his parents were both rich and his father left him an inheritance. Monk is Oliver's half-brother who is jealous of him. According to the will, if Oliver did something bad, he didn't get anything. So Monk comes up with an extremely elaborate plot that takes up the majority of the book and has a lot of gaps just to make Oliver do something bad. Oliver ends up giving him half of his inheritance, which wasn't much. Monks ends up wasting his money, living a criminal life, and dies in prison. Oliver is adopted by a friend of his father and lives happily ever after. So Oliver was never really poor. He was raised poor, but wasn't really poor himself. He doesn't find out who he really is until the end of the book.

In the novel Oliver Twist what made the character Mr Monks a bad person?

The character of Monks is driven by jealousy, revenge and greed. As the story unfolds it is revealed that Monks who conspires with Fagin to turn Oliver into a criminal and destroy his reputation, is Oliver's paternal half-brother. Although he, unlike Oliver, is legitimate, he was born of a loveless marriage. Oliver's mother, Agnes, was their father's true love. Monks, whose real name is Edward Leeford, has spent many years searching for his father's other son - not to befriend him, but to destroy him and so become the sole beneficiary of their father's will. At the request of his benefactor, Mr Brownlow, Oliver, who received the whole inheritance (which proves to be meagre), gives Monks half because he wants to give him a second chance. Monks then emigrates to America, where he squanders his money, reverts to crime, and ultimately dies in prison.

How did the title 'Oliver Twist' originate?

The hero or main character of the novel is called Oliver Twist. He is born in a workhouse to a dying mother and the parish beadle names him "Oliver Twist". At the time it was standard practice to name orphans in such a way that their names were unlike those of real people in the area. However, the names were unmistakably English. (Have you ever encountered the family name "Twist" in real life?) Obviously, the name was invented by the author, Charles Dickens. I hope this is of some use.
