I'm pretty sure it was Marie Adams. I know I had the 78, but it was a while ago now!
That was my first record and it was - Jonny Otis and the Three Tons of Joy
I've been researching the same question today. The song was written in 1921 by Sidney Clare and Con Conrad, and the earliest reference to a recording that I can find is by Isham Jones and his Orchestra (early Chicago jazz), the B-side of his 1921 hit "Wabash Blues." Eddie Cantor also performed the song as early as 1921 on one or more of his radio programs. In 1940, the song became a hit by Dick Robertson, but was also performed by Constance Moore in the movie by the same name. Since then, it has been performed and recorded by several artists, including a young Lena Zavaroni in 1974.
