Whitney was first noticed as a young girl, when she sang in the youth choir at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark NJ. But at that time, it was not clear that she would embark on a music career like her mother Cissy, a respected gospel singer. Later, she sang back-up vocals for several established artists, and also sang with her mother's group. She began to attract a following, including a number of people who wanted record companies to see her. She finally came to the attention of Clive Davis, the president of Arista Records, and he agreed to see her perform at a club in New York City called Sweet Waters. The next day, he signed her to a recording contract, which launched her career.
