i assume you mean the 20th century. the 18th century is the 1700's. if you do mean the 20th century then yes ragtime was one of the first forms of popular music to come around. blues and jazz came a little later more 1920's. hope that helped. (p.s. if you didn't make a mistake then no it had never even been conceived of at that point)

Jazz isn't simply a blend of blues and ragtime. There were several other influences that played their part e.g. the rhythmic influence aspect of African drumming, military band music and the French classical music that was favoured by the Creole population in New Orleans at the time that the first jazz began to be played. But, this is all supposition and subsequent analysis. As no-one wrote about the origins of jazz until some years after the event. no-one really knows.
