He was hanged by the executioner Albert Pierrepoint on 15th July 1953, at Pentonville Prison in London. After being pinnioned for hanging, Christie complained that his nose itched, to which Pierrepoint replied "It won't bother you for long".

Pierrepoint himself died on 10th July 1992- it is estimated that he had hanged over 400 people in his 'career'. In his memoirs, he concluded that capital punishment was not a deterrent to crime.
