Pre-50's Nat King Cole was a dominant influence on a young Ray Charles. Ray obviously dug the King's genre bending piano, as that would come to be a thing Ray was known for later in his career. Nat's style was all at once Jazz, Gospel and Blues and he had a lot of chops to spare. Nat's phrasing also was probably a big influence on Ray, as it was on countless other singers and horn players.
