In brief:

After emigrating from Jamaica to the Bronx, DJ Kool Herc started throwing parties where he'd spin reggae and funk and soul records in the South Bronx. A party thrown for his sister's graduation at 1520 Sedgwick Ave in the Bronx on Aug. 11, 1973 is generally regarded as the "birth" of hip hop. Rapping, or emceeing stemmed from the Jamaican tradition of "toasting" over the records the DJ played. Obviously the influences are far and wide and no one person is solely responsible for hip hop, but DJ Kool Herc is as close as it gets.

Afrika Bambaata invented hip hop along with Dj Kool Herc. The early days of hip hop were just mixing, cutting, and scatching but then MCing and freestyling were invented.
