Joe "King" Oliver was an important New Orleans cornet player who took his band into the Lincoln Gardens in Chicago for a long engagement. In so doing, he helped disseminate jazz from New Orleans into other parts of the US. He earned the nickname "King" because he was considered the greatest cornet player in New Orleans and in jazz. Later. Louis Armstrong joined his band on second cornet and, eventually, his playing eclipsed that of his boss. He left behind an excellent recorded legacy of his music.
