What is skepta rescue me about?

Well it's a tune, by an artist, so it's subjective to interpretation... as in I haven't heard an explicit explanation. However, I highly rate Skepta, and have tracked his music for a while. If you know, before Doin It Again singles came out to mass appeal (double platinum, I believe). Skepta has been highly progressive as a producer/mc in the UK grime scene (you probably know this). What been recent however, was his increased output of commercial sounds, in s to gain wider attention. Skepta was very honest in his intentions, and though not holding as strict to his brother JME, Skepta made clear he would do it independently with his own tools for success... and well done... the whole album is, IMO the best attempt at mainstream attempt for a grime emcee without losing any authenticity. To answer your question, Rescue Me seems quite evident to be about the current route he's chosen. Some have blown him off for losing his grime edge. In grime especially, when you lose that core that made you big in the first place... it get's fragile. Because if your overall chart success can't maintain (which happens in a capitalistic, trend-wise industry)... as an artist, they also have alienated his original supports. Rescue Me is the about the challenge he faces, and doing it largely alone> further, grime has always been vexed as viable way to make ends as an artist. "No ceilings, no doors, no walk all over the beat no floors, I tell a hater I love you loads, tell my supporters I love you more/ and they say I've changed/ I say I'm making a brand new lane." <-- This would seem to demo that. No ceiling meaning the popular economic terms use something having a "limit". (i.e. price ceiling). No doors, means he's not opening up to major label deals and commercial routes which tend to have degrading strings attached. It also solidifies the struggle he is going to... much like Atmosphere's "Trying to Find a Balance" tune... Skepta is displaying his feelings toward his reputation as an artist. As the album hadn't come out there was a potential risk for what i mentioned above... but he's taking the risk, as he was very vocal about in his pre-release twitter hype. "Everyday is like truth-or-dare, so spin that bottle/ cause if it lands on me, Ima stay true to my word/ and I don't want anymore respect than I deserve/" This balance between underground and commercial ends. He is staying to himself, regardless of how he will be received. The video of the tune enforces this stress, as he is displayed in a straight jacket at an insane asylum. Anyways, listen to it again now, and hopefully all that becomes apparent. If one prefers straight, pure grime... this album may not be for them. Skepta's future work may not be for them either. However, all that into consideration... you can't slate man for his success. ~Bless
