If what i think is right and you simply care about technical musicianship than just listen to any of the first 6 van halen albums and all 5 GnR albums and compare the guitar parts it should be obvious. I mean EVH is a guitar god and Slash cant do half the stuff Eddie can.

I would have to say Metallica.... Tough question as they are 2 different bands. Van Halen plays more melodic metal, while up until lately, Metallica was considered a speed metal band . Van Halen also used VH1 as a vehicle to spread their music, while Metallica did not use music video's until well into their career, with the song ONE being the first. So while both being popular, in terms of record sales alone, you would tend to say Van Halen is the better band during the 80s and 90s. However in present day, Metallica have outsold Van Halen and remain a huge live draw across the globe.

Man, I have such a problem with slash's reputation as being this "GUITARD GOD", the dude is good but no where a "GOD", there are musicians that can play an instrument and others that master and bring fresh new ideas and just plain raw talent, those who are leaders & those who follow!!!
