Well, of course I am no expert. However, in my opinion it really depends on how you define the word 'bigger.' No doubt, both Rod Stewart and Elton John have made successful careers for themselves, and have many many fans. They have both sold many records and have 'hit' songs. However, Rod Stewart has been a "sex-symbol' for numerous women, and has had a huge following of fans who have been lusting after him over the years. Elton John, on the other hand, has never had such sex -appeal, and therefore, has always lacked those who would follow a star for such 'sexual-attraction.' Still, although Rod Stewart and Elton John both have performing talent and songs that endure through the ages, I think that when it comes right down to it, Elton John has been the 'bigger' musical hit, so to speak. I think that EJ has sold more records, has had more hit singles, has been seen as the more talented of the two, and has comanded more respect and aplomb as a performer. In other words: Rod Stewart's immense success has been partly because of his singing and performing, but also partly because of his 'sex-appeal' to many. Whereas, Elton John has been the great success that he is, all because of his musical skills (singing, piano playing and performing). In my opinion, the 'bigger' hit is the person who is most successful because of his/her talent and expertise, and not because of any 'sexual attraction. All that having been said: I am a huge fan of both Elton John and Rod Stewart!

Unlikely to have been any real feud as they are great friends... plenty of minor fall-outs though... like the time Rod bought Elton a small novelty fridge for a Christmas present... and Elton bought Rod a Rembrandt painting...or when Elton sent Rod a £30 Boots voucher as a wedding present and told him to get something for the house.

YES... Rod Stewart wrote the song about a friend of the Faces who had gone to New York and become successful but was killed while he was there. At that time, it was a big step to take as no-one had really broached the subject in popular music, but Rod felt comfortable with it as his manager was gay, as was his PR man, as well as several friends like Long John Baldry and Elton John.
Your Song Did you know:"Your Song" has been covered by Rod Stewart, Roy Orbison, Garth Brooks and many more.
It was Freddie Mercury actually. Freddie was one of Elton's closest friends and they used to nickname each other in reference to female celebrities of the same name... So Elton became "Sharon" because of Sharon John, who was some UK-based soap opera-actress of the time - Freddie became "Melina" because of opera singer Melina Mercouri. CORRECTION: sorry but the above information is slightly wrong as the nicknames were given to Rod Stewart (Phyllis) and Elton John (Sharon) by Long John Baldry when they played together in the sixties. Robert Plant famously became Elsie and by the time Freddie Mercury came along to become Melina, the habit of giving names like this had formed with the celebrities.
They are estimated to be the same as far as record sales go.
Rod Stewart is happily 'married' to Penny Lancaster-Stewart.
