In the early years, and sometimes today, a live They Might Be Giants performance may only consist of the two Johns, although typically they tour as a set of five. The Johns's accompanying group has varied over the years, but the most recent line up has been their longest running: Dan Miller on guitar, Danny Winkauf on bass and Marty Beller on drums. Marty Beller replaced Dan Hickey in 2004. Prior to this, the band was often referred to as "The Two Johns and the Band of Dans" because everyone in the group was named either John or Dan.
