The song seems to be written from the father's perspective, and there are many guesses to why the begining scene played out the way it did. Some say that the father and the son were in a car accident together, some say that the little boy died of other reasons that fall personal to one of the members of the band- and etc. The video begins by showing the changes in the mother/daughter (The woman who showed up in the car) and it symbolizes how the death of her two loved ones has affected her. She doesn't play music, she rings the door bell- and the chorus then proclaims "Here comes goodbye." And while most people take that as the literal "Goodbye" it can also be taken as her finally letting go, and becoming at peace with the fact that she lost her son and father, or maybe she's saying goodbye to the depression and change she has been through.
