The song you are thinking of is Monotonus which Eartha sang in New Faces of 1952 and the film "New Faces" It is actually a reference to Johnny Ray ("I even made Johnny Ray smile for me")who in 1951 had the hit song "Cry" (Lyrics start something like " If your sweetheart sends a letter of good bye..." ) Other lyrics of the song are also likely lost on todays generation such as " a camel once walked a mile for me", which is a take off on the Camel cigarette ads of that day with the tag line"I'd walk a mile for a Camel".

The questioner had the right song. The line is "I want to sing songs like the guy who cries." It was on her album "That Bad Eartha," which was released in 1958. It's not Buddy Holly, then, whose biggest hit yet was "That'll be the Day," an upbeat number, and Johnny Ray's "Cry" was old news. Paul Anka was by far the weepiest of the teen idols, but "A Time To Cry" and "Puppy Love" were still a couple of years away. Eartha seems to be imitating Johnny Mathis when she gets to that line, and the timing is right. He was the new star of the day.

Actually, the song "I Want to be Evil" was recorded on March 12, 1953 at Manhattan Center NYC and first appeared on the RCA 10" album "RCA Presents Eartha Kitt", the EPB3062 2 disc ep set of 8 songs by the same name, and the single 20/47/5442. The sheet music for the song is copywrighted 1952/1953.
